Man arrested after woman stabbed at gym in 'targeted' attack

NSW emergency services were called to Crunch Fitness in Alexandria in southern Sydney following reports of an alleged stabbing.

Police said the incident occurred in a carpark about 12.30pm at Crunch Fitness on O'riordan Street, Alexandria.

On arrival, officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command were told a man had allegedly stabbed a 39-year-old woman with a kitchen knife.

The woman sustained a number of stab wounds to the neck, upper body and ear.

The alleged attacker, a 45-year-old man presented to Dee Why Police Station at 7.50am on May 9 where he was subsequently arrested and taken to Manly Police Station.

Detective Superintendent Rodney Hart described the incident as "horrendous".

Superintendent Hart said the victim and the offender were in a short "domestic relationship" earlier this year and the incident is being treated as "domestic-violence related".

The man was described as 170-175cm with a muscular, solid built, dark hair, dark beard, olive complexion, and at the time of the alleged attack was wearing a grey jacket and white sneakers.

After the alleged attack he left the scene in a 2006 grey Ford Falcon hatchback.

The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
