The reporter with A Current Affair appeared by video link in Melbourne's Neighbourhood Justice Centre on Wednesday.
He has been charged with two unlawful assault offences on Finn Whittaker, 23, and Xanthe Whittaker, 22, following a dispute in Richmond on February 11 this year.
Costello, son of Nine chairman Peter Costello, did not speak during the brief hearing.
His lawyer Sam Norton said the matter had not yet resolved and Costello, 35, was seeking a contest mention.
He will next face court on November 3.
