Allyson 'iron lady' Schumacher's Team Cold Chisel went onto this year's Eglinton Tennis Club's spring competition grand final against Team Wham as distinct underdogs, but they caused the biggest boilover in the club's history.
They took out John 'slugger' Bullock's team 12 sets to four.
Team Cold Chisel were quick out of the boxes, winning the first five sets. At this early stage in the match, Bullock was looking very concerned and re-grouped his side to work out a plan on how and when to play his trump card.
On the other hand, 'iron lady' Schumacher was just waiting in the wings, assessing when to put the foot down to really bury the hot favourites.
Schumacher's tactics proved troublesome for Bullock's side, burying them in front of the large, vocal crowd.
Schumacher was always confident her side could take out the hot favourites.
''As I said last week, odds on favourites do get beaten. This victory was a sweet victory and one that I wont forget in a long time,'' Schumacher said.
Losing captain 'slugger' Bullock was gracious in defeat, claiming the better side won on the day.
''It just wasn't our day, that's tennis, the iron lady and her troops played some very smart tennis and took control of the match from the word go. There is an old saying in tennis, you can only play as well as your opponent lets you play,'' Bullock said.
Team Cold Chisel's star young gun, nationally ranked Grace Schumacher, was in blistering form with her powerful hard hitting and crafty net skills doing the damage.
Matt Tree saw the ball like watermelons, with his cannon-ball serve and deadly forehand upsetting his opponents.
The iron lady was in cruise control as she carved up her opponents with a wide range of crafty shots. Caitlin Spears, Toko Tari, Andrew Tree and David Bant all played well above their ability and were in no small way responsible for steering the side to a brilliant victory.
Well folks this will be my last column for the year. I would like to wish all my readers and their families a very happy and safe Christmas and a most prosperous and healthy New Year.
