Lachlan Coyte will skipper Orange in the upcoming Western Zone Premier League

The 18-year-old wicket keeper has been voted skipper for Orange District Cricket Association's upcoming Western Zone Premier League campaign as the side's leadership group felt it was time to inject some youth into the captaincy role.

Coyte will have the C next to his name during the team's first-up clash against Midwest at Gulgong as he enters his third year of representative cricket.

And even though the talented kid acknowledges it's a big role to take on at such a young age, he knows he isn't alone in making the meaningful decisions.

"It's not just me leading the side," Coyte said.

"We've got a leadership group and I've got guys like Bailey Ferguson and Fletcher Rose giving me a hand as well, I'm just lucky to be captain.

"I think the club wanted to go for a new feel this season and try something different. If I miss something I dare say the other guys will help me pick up on it."

ODCA will be hoping its new skipper can help change the culture as the winning results have been few and far between in recent times.

"We've had a few rough seasons," Coyte said.

"We want to try and get cricket strong again and show them that Orange is back.

"Bathurst and Dubbo are always the top two teams and we want to be back in that mix again."

Every skipper should want to manage his teammates and the game, but also look to lead by example on the field and Coyte's got a few things he'd like to focus on from an individual standpoint.

"I'd like to bat longer and look to rotate the strike more," he said.

"I just need to lead from the front and put my best foot forward. As a team, we'd obviously like to lead the competition but we want to take it game by game and make sure we're always improving."

"The goal for us is to really put a stamp on the competition."

Victoria Park Gulgong is the destination for the first-up clash and Coyte will be joined in the side by familiar ODCA faces, Ed Morrish, Darryl Kennewell and Bailey Ferguson.
