Mark Frecklington says name change to Central West Cricket Council makes sense

That's Mitchell Cricket Council president Mark Frecklington's approach to the recently confirmed name change that's set to tweak the association's title to the Central West Cricket Council.

The committee unanimously voted in favour of the adjustment at the last annual general meeting, meaning fair trading is the only party that needs to tick off on it.

The initial suggestion to change the name was met with some backlash online, to which Frecklington's response was simple.

"When you're changing to something that explains the region you're from, it makes sense," he said.

"One of the comments in the meeting was that the name shouldn't keep being changed but that's not what it's about.

"We want to make the logical change now then leave it as it is."

It's not as if cricket fans and players from within the region have a hard time identifying the association but people travelling from out of town often struggle to make the link.

"Sometimes when we go to competitions we have people ask us where Mitchell is," he said.

"They ask us if it's from Canberra or other parts of the state ... we appreciate why the name initially went to Mitchell but we feel like the name's a bit vague.

"A lot of the other zones have their recognisable names like Southern Riverina and North Coastal. Ours is the only one that doesn't really relate to the region."

With cricket fast-approaching, Frecklington's hard at work ensuring the safety and viability of competition play around the region and said his season kicked off about a month ago. "It's been underway for a few weeks," he laughed.

"It's nice for cricket to be back and we're just putting a few finishing touches on bits and pieces but it's all pretty much sorted and ready to go. "It will be good to see it back next weekend."
