The call up for Burns was made after James Jeggo suffered a minor glute strain, allowing Burns to join the Australian team for their matches against Iraq on Thursday night and the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
Burns was named in Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou's initial 30-man squad but lack of minutes for his club side FC Tokyo saw him cut.
The Blayney product currently has 24 Socceroos caps and three goals in national colours to his name.
The Socceroos team also includes former Bathurst junior Rhyan Grant, who is chasing a debut appearance for the national side.
Socceroos are currently in a precarious position in the battle for a qualification spot. After five games Australia sit third in their pool, outside of the top two spots which provide an automatic World Cup spot.
