Tragically, in 1986, the young officer was shot and fatally wounded at Perthville.
But his supreme sacrifice lives in on within the Chifley Local Area Command, thanks to a prestigious award named in his honour.
Yesterday, as part of the annual Chifley local area command awards ceremony, Sgt Quinn’s dedication to the community was again acknowledged when Sgt Dave Parsons was named the second recipient of the annual Paul Quinn Memorial Award.
Sgt Quinn’s mother, Barbara Quinn, was on hand to assist with the presentation of the award, which recognises the good work being done day in and day out by police officers and unsworn staff in the Chifley LAC.
In presenting the award, Chifley local area commander Superintendent Michael Robin-son described Sgt Parsons as a capable and devoted officer.
“He has performed his role as the Chifley education and development officer to a remarkably high level,” Supt Robinson said.
“Over the last year, Sgt Parsons has managed 22 probationary constables, including some with significant performance issues.
“Despite his extreme workload, Sgt Parsons is always willing to assist the command in operational areas without complaint.
“The quality of the junior staff within the command is, in part, due to his efforts.”
Supt Robinson went on to say Sgt Parsons has a quiet confidence that sees him highly respected throughout the command.
Supt Robinson said 17 nominations for the award were received this year, with nominees put forward by their colleagues.
He said the award puts focus on the officer who continually achieves, and who epitomises the traits of excellence in policing.
“It’s not about a single effort – the best job, the most difficult or dangerous job,” Supt Robinson said.
“This award targets officers who consistently perform to a high level; the officer who gets the job done, who goes the extra yard for the good of the community hunting down offenders or proactively engaging in the workplace.”
